Internship in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia with focus on experimental animals

Location: Experimental Surgery Facility of the Experimental Animal Center, Vetsuisse Faculty, University of Bern, Switzerland

Duration: 1 year

The focus of the internship will be in anaesthesia, analgesia and peri-operative care of experimental animals. The Experimental Surgery Facility is a satellite centre of the ECVAA, equipped with state-of the-art devices and provides veterinary support for challenging short and long-term experimental trials in which anaesthesia and analgesia are required. Cardiovascular, neurovascular and transplantation surgeries are highly represented in our case log, mostly carried out in pigs, minipigs, rabbits and rats.

The candidate will work under the direct supervision and teaching of at least 1 ECVAA Diplomate. She/he will also benefit of routine scientific exchanges with 5 ECVAA Diplomate mainly working at the Anaesthesia Division of the Vetsuisse Faculty of the University of Bern and with a double Diplomate (ECVAA and ECLAM) as well as a ECZM Diplomate. During the internship, it is warmly encouraged spending some days at the veterinary teaching hospitals (small animal, equine and farm animal) of the Department of Clinical Veterinary Science, Vetsuisse Faculty, University of Bern, Switzerland and in other facilities of the Experimental Animal Center.

For this position, a genuine interest in the research setting, interest and motivation in working in a multi-professional and multi-lingual team and interest in contributing to the advancement of medical and veterinary research is required. The candidate must be fluent in English and willingness to learn basic German.

The applicant should have a master’s degree in veterinary medicine and have collected some previous anaesthesia experience. Experience in ICU and/or with research animals are of advantage.

The position can be prolonged and integrated with a Doctorate for the acquisition of the Dr. Med. Vet. title (6-12 months) if the candidate shows interest in pain-related research.
