Anaesthesia Intern
Location: University College Dublin Veterinary Hospital, Belfield, Dublin, Ireland
Duration: 1 year
University College Dublin Veterinary Hospital (UCDVH) invites applications for the 12 month position of small animal anaesthesia intern starting May 27th 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The application deadline is 9th February 2024.
University College Dublin Veterinary Hospital is located on a 330 acre purpose-built landscaped campus. Dublin city centre is 4 km north of the campus and the coast 20 minute away on foot. The University campus has good transport links to the city and surrounding areas.
University College Dublin Veterinary Hospital has 3 board certified anaesthetists, 1 anaesthesia registrar, 3 anaesthesia residents, 1 anaesthesia intern and 3 anaesthesia nurses. The anaesthetic caseload at the hospital is very varied with an unusually high proportion of very sick cases. The anaesthesia interns working at UCDVH will have the opportunity to anaesthetise a broad range of cases ranging from ASA 1 – 4, competency permitting. All intern anaesthetic plans will be discussed with a senior anaesthetist prior to induction of anaesthesia and the intern will receive considerable support at the beginning of their internship. This support will be reduced as the intern’s confidence and skills increase throughout the internship. Case load permitting, the anaesthesia intern may attend and present at our weekly journal club, and they will be encouraged to give one anaesthesia-related presentation during their internship year at our weekly resident seminar.
The UCDVH anaesthesia internship helps prepare junior veterinarians for a career in veterinary anaesthesia. The majority of our past interns are now residents or specialists in anaesthesia or related fields (Emergency and Critical Care and Pharmacology).
If you would like any more information, or would like to discuss the anaesthesia intern position at UCD further, please contact Dr Claire Loughran (claire.loughran@ucd.ie).
